The re-introduction of African wild dogs in South Africa

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), Endangered and lacking sufficient large protected habitat in South Africa outside Kruger National Park, has been rebuilt into a second national population through an intensively managed metapopulation strategy proposed in 1998 and implemented by the multi-stakeholder Wild Dog Advisory Group of South Africa, which coordinates reintroductions into small, predator-fenced conservation areas under 1,000 km2 alongside periodic translocations between them to mimic natural dispersal and sustain genetic flow. Wild dogs were reintroduced into nine officially coordinated state and private reserves plus four additional private reserves outside the formal program, expanding the species' South African range by about 4,600 km2; the managed metapopulation peaked at 264 animals in 17 packs, exceeding the size and density of the naturally regulated Kruger population, achieving the program's nine-pack target in just five of the planned ten years.
